Refurbishing an Old Jewelry Box

jewelry box on display

Our jewelry needs a safe place to live. Fragile stones and materials will get damaged if they are jumbled up with a bunch of other jewelry. Having a box with compartments for storage is important, especially if you love one of a kind, handcrafted pieces that are made with lots of care and attention to detail.

I found this old jewelry box at a thrift shop. It wasn't looking great, the inside was dirty red velvet and the outside had scuffs and stains and a layer of grime that I didn't even want to touch. But it was only a few dollars and it had a lot of potential, so I brought it home and gave it some love and now it has a second life in my jewelry display when I do shows.

The process took some time but the results were worth it. I scrubbed the outside and it changed to a lighter shade of white and brought out the gold detailing. Now, even though it has some scuffs, it looks clean and cared for. The red velvet inside had to be replaced, and I chose a white satin over foam that would cushion the pieces I was going to place inside. Many layers of grime, dirt, dust and random jewelry components came out with the velvet. The bright, smooth satin looks clean and luxurious, ready to house some precious jewels!

Do you store your jewelry in a special box? Maybe it's time to re-evaluate how you're storing your jewelry, or maybe you have the perfect system for keeping everything on hand, easy to access and secure. If you love jewelry as much as I do, how you store it is just as important as how you wear it.
